Identifiernot specifiedDate1959Photographernot specifiedDescriptionThere were plans for a new high school in the area for quite some time before Asquith Girls High School opened. A bushfire which damaged the Hornsby Home Science School in 1957 only amplified the need. In 1958 the Department of Education purchased a seven-acre site at Asquith with access from Baldwin and Stokes Avenues. The property was part of the former Stokes orchard and a resumed property formerly occupied by the Victory Dairy.

The incomplete Asquith Girls High opened early in 1959. The 38 staff and approximately 700 students had to go up a scaffold ramp through a window to reach the usable classrooms that were in the top floors of A, B and C blocks. PE classes were held on the then unsealed Stokes Ave. Initially the school didn’t have enough space, and as a result parts of the old Hornsby Home Science school had to be used for classrooms. Staff had to commute between Asquith and Hornsby throughout the day. As well, some classes were also held out on the road when the building noise got too loud. Lucky there wasn’t much traffic about in those days. Construction of the school was finished before the end of 1960.

The first Principal was Miss Alma Hamilton, who was instrumental in the planning of the school colours, uniform, song and the motto, “Learn to Live”.
