Hornsby's first purpose built shopping centre complex was opened on August 3, 1961. It was originally named Westfield Plaza but was shortened to 'Westfield' in 1968. The construction of Westfield Plaza cost approximately $700,000 and on completion featured 22 shops including McDowell's Department Store, Snows Department Store and Nock & Kirby hardware. The trading centre generated 250 retail jobs.

Frank Lowy and John Saunders were two post-war immigrants who initially set up a delicatessen business together in Blacktown in the 1950s. They catered primarily for European immigrants like themselves. They moved on to property development and opened their first ‘American-style’ shopping centre, Westfield Place, Blacktown, with two department stores, a supermarket and 12 shops built around a courtyard. It provided 50 free on-site parking spaces.

The original centre was named because of its location in Sydney’s western suburbs and because of the former rural nature of the surroundings. In the 1960s, Westfield listed on the stock exchange and opened more stores around Sydney, expanding into Victoria and Queensland.

In 1966, Coles opened their first New World Supermarket in NSW at Westfield Plaza Hornsby.
In 1968, Westfield Hornsby increased in size to 64 shops including Best & Less.

Northgate Shopping Centre opened in November 1979 featuring 67 specialty stores plus Grace Bros., K Mart and Coles. Westfield Trust purchased Northgate in 1997 with the prospect of combining and building one major regional shopping centre. Westfield then developed plans to create a state-of-the-art shopping centre by linking Northgate with Westfield Hornsby.
