Identifiernot specifiedPhotographernot specifiedDescriptionThomas Ernest Rofe was a Hornsby Shire Councillor 1927-44 and Shire President in 1932. He was a solicitor, prominent philanthrophist, and the son of John Rofe from Petersham.
A yearly street competition was held for many years. The competitor gaining the most points had his name inscribed on the T. E. Rofe Cup and was awarded a replica cup.
If it had not been for his opposition, the park in Galston Road, which now bears his name would have been the site of what is now, the Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Hospital. The New South Wales Government originally set the park aside as the site for the hospital. Cr Rofe, however, objected to the proposition arguing that the land, lying 3.2 kms from the station was too far from public transport. He agreed to buy the land along Galston Road on condition that title was vested in the name of Hornsby Shire Council and reserved for parkland. This was done and the Galston Road land became known as Rofe Park. Several sites for the new hospital were considered and the one on which the hospital now stands was purchased for £6,000.
He was a generous benefactor to many hospitals and by 1925 had given over £28,000 to various state hospitals. He promised a cheque for £1,000 towards Hornsby Hospital when the foundation stone was laid. Apart from his charitable gifts Mr Rofe was President of the Churches of Christ of New South Wales and was a member of the Council of Churches in New South Wales. He was also a member of the Town Planning Association.DimensionsHornsby Shire Council
