Light and vibration from traffic brought an end to the star mapping in 1917, and the observatory was closed in 1931 on the retirement of the resident astronomer, james Short. A commemorative plaque stands on the site in Observatory Park, Pennant Hills. This reconstructed photograph is based on the 1935 photograph shown on page 7 of John Noble's book.
