St Kilda had previously been the private home of James and Sarah Channon who called it Pakenham, after Anne Pakenham, the wife of the Duke of Wellington. Originally built in 1894 on land between Junction Road (Edgeworth David Avenue), George Street, Florence Street and Hunter Street. The building was situated on the highest part of the property facing George Street. Pakenham was purchased by Miss Fields in 1935 and turned into a private hospital which could accommodate about thirty patients at a time.
