Charles Austin and his employee James Savage came to Hornsby in 1897 when they established the Hornsby Butchering Co. between the Waitara Foundling Home and the hotel now called the 'Blue Gum'. Later Austin purchased land between William Street and Dural Lane Hornsby where he built another butcher shop which was managed by James Savage.
