DescriptionOn Saturday 18th April 1898 a large gathering attended the opening and dedication of St Peter’s Church of England on Peats Ferry Road, Hornsby Junction.
Extensions were added to the building in May 1906, providing additional seating.
On Saturday 25th January 1913 disastrous bushfires raged in more than 15 suburbs across Sydney. The Hornsby fire started in Higgins’ Valley burning a homestead. Despite attempts by townsfolk to hold back the flames, the fire swept into Peats Ferry Road and destroyed the church building within minutes and five other cottages around Hornsby. The church’s insurance had only been renewed a few days before the fire.
Plans were made to rebuild the church, however it was decided to delay this work until the end of the war. Parishioners met in the School of Arts hall until the new church was built in 1924.
