Within 26 years in 1942, enrolments had increased by 100% to 1,510 pupils with the school being the 6th largest in the State of N.S.W.
During that time of rapid growth, the Department of Education struggled to keep pace with the increasing population in Hornsby. Although school buildings were added, classrooms were often over-crowded and on some occasions, as can be observed in this photo, the class had to be conducted in the open air.
