In 1918 Station Street had no footpath or kerb and guttering when the Government Savings Bank was built (since demolished - it was the second building from the corner on the southern end). In September 1918 the President of the Hornsby Shire Council described the triangular block bounded by Station, High and Coronation Streets as looking "like a dog with a bitten ear." At the time due to wartime savings measures, the Council was unable to immediately improve the area which was also described by Councillor Moore as "pretty horrible."
By 1922 there were four buildings in Station Street. From north to south they were: the Railway Hotel, a butcher's shop, the Government Savings Bank and a motor garage. There was a vacant allotment between the butcher's shop and Government Savings Bank. It was on this vacant allotment that keys to the bank's safe were found. They were discarded after an unsuccessful attempt to open the bank's safe following the murder of the bank manager Mr. Kemmis on his way home from work on 7th July 1922.Physical FormatHornsbyDimensionsRobert Green Collection
