The Fitzgerald General Store Fire, Hornsby 1894

DetailsJames Fitzgerald was one of the early shopkeepers in Hornsby. In 1887 he established his general store opposite where Barker College is now located. This was a weatherboard building with an iron roof. On the morning of Wednesday 27th September 1894 the store caught alight and was totally destroyed with the cause not being determined.
As far as is known this is the first report of a store being burned down in Hornsby. There was a honey shop owned by Mr. W. H. Duffy that was destroyed by fire a year earlier, however this appears to have been in Normanhurst (the Old Hornsby).
The newspaper articles in this document provide details of the Fitzgerald store fire including two separate reports (the Cumberland Argus report is more comprehensive) from the subsequent coronial inquiry.
