Hornsby's search for a cemetery site in 1914 and related events to 1937

DetailsThis history provides an interesting insight into events that unfolded between 1914 and 1937 when it became necessary to find a new site for a cemetery for North Shore and Northern Beaches suburbs, following the impending closure of the Gore Hill Cemetery.
Hornsby clergymen were concerned that they would be forced to travel the long distance to Rookwood Cemetery to conduct funerals when Gore Hill and the smaller cemetery adjacent to St John’s Anglican Church in Gordon closed.
In 1914 Hornsby Shire Council began looking for a site for a cemetery throughout the Shire and three areas were identified: Galston Road (present day Hornsby Heights), Mt. Colah near the railway station and Berowra.
This document also provides the history how the 145 acre Northern Suburbs Cemetery site (dedicated in 1902) was established and developed in an area that was initially inaccessible by road.
The State Government, over a span of 40 years made a number of promises to construct a tram or rail line from St. Leonards to Eastwood with a spur line to connect to the Northern Suburbs Cemetery. This document details most of the meetings and deputations that took place between about 6 Councils to pressure the Government to act upon it promise to build the rail line.
Eventually in 1937, after years of representations by the Councils, the rail line was rejected by Cabinet due its cost, estimated at £1,000,000. Instead a cheaper option was adopted with a road link between Artarmon and Epping (Epping Road) at a cost of £100,000. The Government believed this would better serve the community’s needs.
