He married Eleanor Kilpack in 1818 and became brother in law to James Milson of Milsons Point. He was Constable at the Cowpastures before being granted 230 acres of land in Pennant Hills. He was appointed Superintendent of the Government Garden and then Superintendent of the Carters Barracks in Sydney. This job was abolished in 1834. In 1856 Murray purchased 155 acres of land on the east of his grant running down to Devlin's Creek. Murray Farm Road Beecroft runs along the middle of his land.
