DetailsA movement began in October 1901 when an influential deputation of medical men saw the State Premier with a proposal that the Government build a Consumptive (tuberculosis of the lungs) Hospital in the Hornsby area (Ku-Ring-gai Chase, near Mt. Colah). This involved resuming about 50 acres of parkland for those suffering from tuberculosis.
When this information became public, what followed was a storm of protests that prevailed for two years.
Newspapers from late May 1902 were inundated with letters to the Editor and some of these have been included, in abbreviated form or in full.
The Consumptive Hospital became an extremely contentious issue and involved a number of municipalities and Progress Associations working together, agitating against the proposal.
