DetailsBerowra’s first school, which began operation in 1894 was held in the front room of pioneer settler Mary Wall’s house. The school was a half time school with the teacher’s time divided between Berowra and Calabash Bay (three days in one school, two in the other, then switch). The first teacher was Mr Aubrey and many of the students were the children of fettlers working on the railway. While in Berowra, Mr Aubrey married another teacher, Ida Helen Willis. She assisted him at the school. Both are featured in this collection.
It wasn’t long though before there were sufficient students to require a dedicated school and school building. The school at Calabash Bay was closed in 1897 and Berowra became a separate school. Plans were underway to build a new building to hold classes in. Mary Wall requested an allowance to continue using her home until the school was built and was granted five shillings a week.
