Born 17/11/1887, he was a British field marshall at the outbreak of World War II, he proceeded to France in command of the Third Division. Following Dunkirk he was placed in command of the South Eastern Army in England, and in August 1942 in command of the Eighth Army in North Africa, at Alamein el Halfa. On 31 August 1942 he halted the advance of the German Field Marshall, Rommell. In the last few days of October 1942, the Eighth Army won the famous victory of El Alamein, for which Montgomery was knighted. Montgomery's summing up of El Alamein, "We could not have won the battle in 12 days without that magnificent Australian Division". He meant the 9th Division.
