StreetTobruk AvenueSuburbCarlingfordDetailsTobruk was a coastal fortress in Libya in the 1941 Western Desert campaign in World War II. A British-Australian force, among them the 16th Brigade, attacked the Italian defences, 21 January 1941, capturing 25,000 Italians. On 14 April 1941, 50 German tanks made the first major assault on Tobruk; they were engaged by the British Australian anti-tank gunners. Two attempts to relieve Tobruk in May and June by General Wavell failed. In Nov.1941 a long-planned British attack to relieve Tobruk before Rommel launched an attack to subdue the garrison resulted in fierce fighting, in which the German armour penetrated to the Egyptian frontier. But by Dec. 1941 the last of the Axis forces had withdrawn from Tobruk, ending the 242 day siege of the Allied garrison.
