The town was captured on 23 Jan, 1943, after fierce fighting over Tobruk and El Alamein. On 12 and 13 May 1943 the Axis powers finally surrendered at Tunis and the long campaign which began with the Italian advance to Sidi Barranim in Dec. 1940 was over.
