Identifiernot specifiedPhotographernot specifiedDescriptionJames (Jim) Douglas Wilton was born in Sydney in 1903 to parents Frederick and Ruth Wilton (nee Boesenberg). Jim went on to become known as Australia’s leading horse breaker and he wrote an acclaimed book about the subject. He had learnt the craft of horse breaking from his father. During the 1940s Jim Wilton was the proprietor of the Capella Riding School on the Pacific Highway at Waitara. Horses could be hired at a reasonable price, saving the riders the energy and the expenses involved in owning their own horses, the riding school was sold to Pain Manufacturing Company who erected their Mello-lite building there early in the 1950s.
Jim Wilton then moved to Russell Avenue in Wahroonga where he created ‘Jim Wilton’s World-Famous Performing horse and dog’ show which had just started out as a hobby. He travelled the country with his seven performing horses led by ‘Tim the Wonder Horse’ who was recognised at the time as the world’s champion performing saddle horse. According to Jim, Tim and his understudy, Tony, were the only two horses in the world who could walk on their knees.
By the late 1960s, Jim had moved to ‘Capella’ Hume Highway at Casula and was often seen riding down the middle of the road with a team of horses stretched across two lanes behind him, no bridles or leads, just loose, following freely as he moved them to new pastures or to bring them home for training in a show.
In the 1980s Jim moved to a property in Warnervale on the Central Coast where he passed away in 1987 at the age of 83.
