StreetCheltenham RoadSuburbCheltenhamDetailsCheltenham station was opened in 1898, at the request of William Chorley, who wished to subdivide lands he had purchased. He suggested the name of his birthplace "Cheltenham", (from Gloucestershire, England) for the new suburb. This gave the name to the road. Mr. Chorley's house was called "Mount Pleasant" and his estate was subdivided in 1908. A covenant on the land specified that no shops were to be built on the properties adjoining the station. To this day no commercial enterprises have been allowed, except for one service station, which no longer exists. Cheltenham Road was first used in 1901. It was known earlier as Kent Road. Epping extended through to Cheltenham. SourceBeecroft Cheltenham History Group 1995, Beecroft and Cheltenham: The Shaping of a Sydney Community to 1914, Beecroft, p. 280.
