SuburbHornsbyTypeOtherDetailsA deep valley immediately to the west of Hornsby. It is said to have been named by early timbergetters on account of the large number of 'old man' kangaroos in the area. The first settler in the Hornsby area was Thomas Edward Higgins who received a grant of 250 acres in 1836: 'Farm to be named "Old Mans Valley"'. The rich soil of the valley supported valuable stands of timber and in 1829 Surveyor Govett reported '...the Old Mans Valley, in which there is some fine and valuable timber: its southern side is partly cleared and is the property of some individual. A horse may be taken down but not with a burden.' CreatorPowell, John P. 1994, Placenames of the Greater Hawkesbury Region, Hawkesbury River Enterprises, Berowra, p.87.
