SuburbPennant HillsTypeSuburbDetailsA suburb south-west of Hornsby. The origin of the name is uncertain and has generated a good deal of discussion. The name first appears as 'Pendant Hills in the Dundas District' in 1800, and then as Pennant Hills in the 1802 Muster. Governor Hunter referred to the area as Pendant Hills: it was one of the stations in the Sydney to Parramatta signals service which made use of pendants (i.e. flags). In Macquarie's time it was known as Barren Hills because he ordered a great deal of timber to be cleared for building purposes. The first land grantees included Samuel Marsden and Rowland Hassell. Recent research by Ralph Hawkins suggests that there is no evidence that the name derives from an early signalling system. The name was first used by Ann Bellamy who said in 1801 that was where she lived. Governor Hunter wrote to Sir Joseph Banks mentioning it as a range of hills. In 1805 George Caley mentioned John MacArthur's farm at Pennant Hills. Hawkins argues that the origin of the name lies with Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) who was a member of the Royal Society and a friend of Sir Joseph Banks, and known to senior people in the colony several of whom approved land grants along Pennant Hills Ridge.
