Vincent William (Bill) Seymour was born in Yorkshire in 1824. He served in the British Navy, as a teenager, in the wars against China. He also served under Owen Stanley on H.M.S Rattlesnake, before making a permanent home in NSW in about 1848. After some years working on coastal shipping, he married Sarah Rebecca Hibbs in 1861 and settled, in 1862, at Peat's Ferry. He was a farmer, shingle-splitter and master mariner at various stages of his life at Brooklyn. He had made some useful connections during his sailing days and used them when he became secretary of the Brooklyn Progress Committee. In many respects, Seymour was the founding father of Brooklyn. His tireless work as Secretary of the Committee achieved a great deal for Brooklyn. He died in 1899 and is buried on Bar Island.
