SuburbThornleighTypeSuburbDetailsThornleigh is a suburb south-west of Hornsby. One of the earliest references to the suburb was on a map dated 1884. Previously the area was known as either South Colo, Pennant Hills and Hornsby. The suburb was named after Chief Constable John Thorn (1794-1838). Thorn was appointed Chief Constable of Parramatta in October 1821. John Thorn and Samuel Horne were involved in the death and shooting of bushrangers John MacNamara and William Dalton on Windsor Road on June 22nd 1830. Three days previously Doctor Sherwin of Parramatta had been set upon by two bushrangers, who stole Dr Sherwin's watch and a case of gold lancets. When the bushrangers stated that they could get 20 pounds for the watch Doctor Sherwin claimed that the watch had sentimental value and that he would try to get the money value of the watch. He rode off to Darling Mills where he was able to borrow 30 shillings, on returning to the clearing where he was accosted he gave the bushrangers the money and they returned his watch. Three days later Chief Constable Thorn, Constable Samuel Horne and another constable where riding along Windsor Road looking for the bushrangers who had accosted Dr Sherwin. The bushrangers exploded from the trees along the road and a shooting match and chase ensued which resulted in the death of John MacNamara and the capture of William Dalton. William Dalton was executed in late June for his part in the theft. In recognition of his bravery, John Thorn was later granted 640 acres in the area where Thornleigh is now.
