TypeClippingDetailsHornsby Shire Gala and Exhibition Week was held between October 10 and 15, 1921, to showcase all that Hornsby had to offer. According to newspaper reports at the time, Gala Week had a real carnival atmosphere with shop keepers, local organisations and the community enthusiastically getting involved. Some of the activities included foot races, flower exhibitions, live sheep weight guessing competitions, dance competitions, photography exhibitions, maypole dancing, gymnastics displays, wood chopping and log sawing events, flag drill displays and a baby show.
A quote from the official souvenir programme states 'Remember this is Hornsby's week. Take your fair share in everything. Hornsby will be a mass of light and colour. Every street will be brilliantly illuminated and every shop window specially dressed for the occasion. Bunting will be flown on every business house and public building. The carnival will be held on the Reserve, which will be lit with hundreds of electric lights. Every tree will be a fairy tree, and the whole effect will suggest Fairyland.'
Proceeds from the event were divided between the Royal North Shore Hospital and the Hornsby Literary Institute.Date3rd October 1921PublisherSydney Morning HeraldKeywordsHornsbyGala Week
