SuburbCowanTypeQuarryDetailsOn the left of the Pacific Highway at Cowan, approaching the northern railway line there is a gateway leading to a quarry. In a corner closest to the highway are the remains of the original quarry, first worked by Max Duffy in 1924. This quarry was still going in 1940 when he quarried more stone and built a second larger home (the first had been located just below the quarry) at the corner of the Pacific Highway and Fraser Road, Cowan. He also built a stone church in Fraser Road. When the Pacific Highway was constructed sand, mined from the quarry was used. In 1990 there were some proposals to use the Cowan Quarry site as a tip. These were resisted on the grounds, that the tip would overlie the headwaters of commercial oyster leases in the bay. Probably Bujwa Bay, off Berowra Creek is meant. Hornsby Council refused the application in March 1991.
