DescriptionThe Union Bridge Company of Pennsylvania designed the First Hawkesbury River Railway Bridge to have a beautiful, graceful and symmetrical appearance. The seven spans were to be supported by six caissons topped with sandstone piers. The base of the caissons measured 15.8 metres lengthways and 7.3 metres across. They were giant tubes from which water and mud could be pumped out. Each caisson was then filled with liquid concrete. One of the caissons reached 49 metres below the water surface, which at that time was the deepest bridge foundation in the world.Physical FormatHawkesbury River
