Heather Alison Rule was born in 1933 in Footscray, Victoria. She is the daughter of the late Erik Rule and Mabel Bull. Heather grew up on a dairy farm in Lardner, Victoria, spending a typical country childhood milking cows and riding horses with her two brothers and sister. Horses play a significant role in Heather’s life, from riding ponies on the farm as a young child to becoming an amateur female jockey in her teens in Victoria. Today Heather has become a successful breeder of Haflinger (Austrian) horses in Arcadia.

Heather went to primary school in Lardner and North Ringwood, high school in Mordialloc and then to Brighton technical college in Victoria. Heather went on to be a very accomplished dressmaker and her talents have been in high demand for 70 years.

Heather married Robert Payne in Chelsea, Victoria in 1955 and they went on to have a son and a daughter. In 1964 the family moved to East Ryde, NSW, due to Robert’s work.
Although the family enjoyed living in East Ryde, it was Heather’s love of horses that led to the family moving to a rural property in Arcadia in 1967.

During the 43 minute interview Heather talks about her early years in country Victoria and her love of horses. She talks about how she met her future husband and their happy married life. Listening to Heather’s story it becomes clear what a creative and talented women she is with her successful dressmaking, horse breeding and standard wisteria businesses. Heather also reminisces about Arcadia in the early days, the people who lived there, what the area looked like and the issues which affected the locals such as the proposed second airport at Galston.

The quality of the interview is good and Heather’s voice was very clear. Her voice became quite animated when she was talking about her passions and she enjoyed telling some funny stories from her past. Heather’s recollections give a wonderful insight into earlier times in Arcadia and a remarkable life.
