Dusthole Bay - Berowra Waters
About
DetailsDusthole Bay is located on the Berrilee side of Berowra Waters. It was said to be named as at low tide winds would often whip up swirls of dust on the sandbank. The area is also known as Crossland Bay.
Arthur Lubeck had a boatshed in Dusthole Bay and in 1934 George Huett acquired it. There he and his family built and hired out boats until 1964 when it was sold to Bill Wilkinson. Huett Marine was then established in that area. The Huett name continued to be associated with the industry through Huett Marine which relocated to Cowan in 1975.
In those early years there were also several permanent houseboats in Dusthole Bay including one that sank in 1925 and was stuck on the sandflats. "Bluey" McCarthy lived in that houseboat for many years and he worked various jobs around Berowra Waters.
In the 1970s more residents were occupying houses more regularly at Berowra Waters and both parking and launching boats were becoming more challenging. At Dusthole Bay visitors, residents and boat hire operators were all using the ferry ramp to launch their boats however, with the ferry becoming busier it made it difficult for Council to continue to allow access to the ramp. Something had to be done.
To address these problems in 1975 Hornsby Council secured a Federal Government grant to help fund reclamation work in Dusthole Bay and it was party filled in to provide a car park, recreation and public toilet facilities, as well as a public boat ramp. At this time the dilapidated and silted up swimming area in Franks Bite (eastern side), called, “Rex Jones Baths”, were relocated to Dusthole Bay (western side). A pedestrian bridge was constructed which provided walking access to Berowra Waters Inn and some houses further around Berowra Waters.
In 1983 the Berowra Waters Marina was constructed replacing the Wilkinson boatshed at the same location.
The swimming baths silted up and became too polluted so did not last too long. The pedestrian bridge was removed around 10 years ago.
In 2009 the Berowra Waters Marina provided a further upgrade to the Dusthole Bay area which included a reconfiguration of car park including construction of a parking deck to establish 203 car parking spaces and 65 public car-trailer spaces. Also included was an expansion of existing open space with a new kids playground and boardwalk was built along Bay Road between the ferry and Berowra Waters Marina.
Today the Marina in Dusthole Bay has a seafood restaurant, café, retail store and accommodation. They also sell and hire out boats of all sizes and provided a variety of marine services.
