In the 1890s, Charles Austin purchased about an acre of land between William Street and Dural lane, Hornsby for 10 pounds and opened a small butchery business. The business flourished and in 1897 Austin built a large brick shop on the site. James Savage managed the business for Austin for many years before John Beattie managed and later bought the business.Some years later the business was bought by Walter S. Hales although the Austin family still retained ownership of the property until it was sold to James Bruce. W. S. Hales & Son continued the business as Bruce's tenants but after the death of Bruce the property was bought by Gorman Hales, son of Walter Hales.
According to Ron Cooney who worked at Hales' butcher shop from 1942 to 1962,"Hales was the biggest butchery outside of Sydney. We had thirteen butchers, two cashiers and two boys working there".Physical FormatHornsbyDimensionsPatricia Dewey
