14th Nov 2022 1:52PMThe Hon. Richard Jones M.L.C. was another high profile NSW personality who used Pomona as his well appointed country residence. Richard rented "Pomona" from the Paling estate (Pietro Marich executor) for a few years up until soon after his daughter Nina's death in October 1902.

Identifiernot specifiedDate1976PhotographerRalph HawkinsDescriptionOne of the oldest homes in the Pennant Hills district is Pomona the home of William Henry Paling of piano fame. William Paling was born in Holland in 1825 and was a skilled pianist, violinist and technician of musical instruments, a skill inherited from his father. At the age of 28 years he immigrated to Australia in 1853 and was naturalised in 1861. As a professor of music, Paling found no difficulty in making a name for himself. He established a successful music house in the city at Wynyard Square and by 1875 he had moved to larger premises in Barrack Street and later to an extensive showroom at 352 George Street. The business became a limited liability company in 1883 and the new organisation was established as W. H. Paling and Co Ltd.
Pomona, an elegant house in the High Victorian style, was built in 1886 and used by the Palings as what is termed today as a 'holiday home'. The house was designed for weekend entertaining with its large public rooms but only two bedrooms. A manager lived in a cottage on the estate to run the large orchard and poultry farm.
Whilst on a trip to Europe Paling met a young Austrian musician by the name of Pietro Marich. Marich later came to Australia and became Paling's personal secretary. By 1888 he was general manager of the city firm.
William Paling's second wife Anne died in October 1894 and he died in August 1895 at their home in 'Woerden' Cambridge Street, Stanmore. They are both buried at Waverley Cemetery.
Marich subdivided part of the estate in 1903 and again in 1908. Subdivisions of the property from 1903 to 1908 created the streets Short, Paling, Pomona, Cavendish and Albion.
By 1920 only a small area of land remained with the house, which was then owned by J.S. Heron. The house and grounds were recorded by the National Trust in 1978.Physical FormatPennant Hills
