PhotographerKaren RichardsonDetailsBrooklyn Cemetery is located on the southern side of Brooklyn Road near the intersection of the Pacific Highway. The cemetery is listed as a place of local heritage significance.
The land was set aside as a general cemetery in 1906 with sections for Anglicans, Catholics, Methodists and Presbyterians and is the resting place of many members of Brooklyn’s pioneer families. Pioneer names such as Hibbs, Lewis, Cole and Parkyns, to name a few, can all be found on the headstones in the cemetery. The first recorded burial in the older section of the cemetery was that of a child, Alice Hibbs in 1906.
Perhaps the best known grave in the cemetery is that of Robert Buie, the Brooklyn soldier credited by many with shooting down the Red Baron in World War I. The Buie family arrived from Scotland circa 1890, shortly after the opening of the railway.
Large numbers of inmates from the Peat and Milson Island psychiatric facilities were buried in the southern end, mostly in unmarked graves. All graves are located to face east to the river and the rising sun. The rows in the older section run from north to south. In the new section the rows run from south to north.
