BiographyRaymond Hassall enlisted on 26 May 1915 with the rank of Corporal.He was promoted to Sargent on 11 December 1915 and 2nd Lieutenant on 26 March 1916. He died from wounds received in his arm and leg.
Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW) newspaper of the 12 April 1919, published this "Friends of the late Lieutenant R. L. [Raymond Langley] Hassall, who was for many years a resident of Broken Hill, and was employed at the South Mine immediately prior to enlisting, have received the following details of the circumstances attending his death from the officer in charge of base records: "In reply to your inquiry with reference to the report of the regrettable loss of the late Lieutenant R. L. Hassall, 5th Pioneer Battalion, official documents show that on Sunday, September 29, 1918, while operating in conjunction with United States infantry around Bellicourt, this officer was detailed to repair a road up to the starting point. He had successfully completed this, and was joining up with his company, when about 400 yards west of Bullecourt a shell burst at his feet and wounded him very severely. He was admitted to the 53rd casualty clearing station, suffering from shell wounds in the leg and right arm. He died at 12.30 a.m. on September 30. His body was interred in the military cemetery at Tincourt."
