DetailsCopy of a letter by Miss Lillian Bertram: one by the ladies who formed the Thornleigh Red Cross.
"The local branch of The Red Cross started on 4 Septembers 1914 in Thornleigh Literary Institute and began as the Thornleigh-Pennant Hills- Normanhurst Branch with Mrs Earle Harvey Hon Sec. and Miss Lillian Wood was a foundation member. Miss Anne Tulloch of Loch Maree in Thornleigh invited women to join and the branch was formed and included Miss Margaret Friend of Windyhaugh and Miss Annie Tulloch. The group met regularly each month and made garment and comforts for headquarters to distribute to the Fighting Forces. The Branch grew and flourished and it became necessary to divide it into a separate branch for Normanhurst and later Pennant Hills. The group continued in Peace times and met in the Pennant Hills hall after leaving the Thornleigh Literary Institute for unknown reasons."
The letter goes on to imply there was a falling out of the ladies from the neighbouring suburbs and Normanhurst became the strongest group when they broke away. KeywordsThornleighRed Cross
