BiographyCecil Pye enlisted on 26 April 1915 and became a Lieutenant Colonel on 19 March 1917 after holding a temporary commission previously.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 11 May 1917 and Mentioned in despatches on 1 June 1917.
The DSO recommendation said "This officer showed conspicuous gallantry and organising powers at Layton Lane near Warkencourt while his Battalion was in the line from February 26th to March 2nd 1917. He was in charge of the whole of the front line held by this battalion and had the whole of the work of organising and conducting the attack on Layton Lane, which was completely successful and exhibited great energy and determination when meeting a counter-attack made by the enemy, and organising a fresh attack to recapture Layton Lane, which he eventually reoccupied".
While serving in the Gallipoli campaign he contracted a serve case of dysentery on 7 October 1915. He was eventually transferred back to Australia, remaining in the country till 22 August 1916 when he returned to Europe.
