John Tibbet purchased five acres from John Clark, Aaron Pearce's son-in-law, on August 13, 1878 and on that site erected the hotel. He used hand made bricks which were extracted from Tibbet's clay-pit.
John Tibbet gave up the hotel about 1900 and died at the age of 72 in 1922.
Two fires are said to have destroyed the original and second older buildings.
The present building was erected in 1955 with its new name in recognition of a 'fine blue gum which grew close by'. During the 1980s, the Blue Gum Hotel was famous for the rock concerts held there. Physical FormatWaitara
