The home was established and operated by the Sisters of Mercy to halt the alarming rate of infant mortality. The home accepted children from birth to age 15 for those who were either treated as outcasts, abandoned by their mothers, exposed to serious danger or were victims of crime. The children received special care and training in a sheltered environment so that they could eventually live a useful life. The Waitara Foundling Home was located on a 12 acre property adjoining the Pacific Highway (southern side) in Waitara.
Initially 70 children were cared for by 10 Sisters.Physical FormatWaitara
