William Paling was born in Holland in 1825 and was a skilled pianist, violinist and technician of musical instruments, a skill inherited from his father. At the age of 28 years he immigrated to Australia in 1853 and was naturalised in 1861. As a professor of music, Paling found no difficulty in making a name for himself. He established a successful music house in the city at Wynyard Square and by 1875 he had moved to larger premises in Barrack Street and later to an extensive showroom at 352 George Street. The business became a limited liability company in 1883 and the new organisation was established as W. H. Paling and Co Ltd.
William Paling lived in 'Pomona' Pennant Hills Road, Pennant Hills.
