Located in Peats Ferry Road, it started publication in November 1914. The first issue of the Hornsby & Kuring-gai Shires’ Advocate went on sale on April 1, 1919. This was in direct competition to the Hornsby Star. The Advocate’s first office was in two small rooms in Station Street, opposite the entrance to Hornsby railway station. This image shows their larger premises on Peats Ferry Road. Circulation of The Advocate soon surpassed that of the Hornsby Star. Albert E. French, a newspaper owner from the South Coast, was looking to purchase a newspaper in a larger Sydney area. Hornsby appealed to him as he said, “Hornsby is where city and country meet.” French and two business partners, Fred McKellar, The Advocate founder, and Herbert Bishop combined to buy the Star and merged it with The Advocate in 1923. In 1938, Advocate Press was made into a private company, Advocate Press Pty Ltd with Albert French as Managing Director.Physical FormatPhotograph
