BiographyRobert James Smith, born 05.01.1900, was the son of the local police sergeant Robert senior and Mary Gertrude Smith of Hornsby.
After enlisting in Sydney on May 17, 1918, he was sent to England as a member of the 17th General Service Reinforcements. However, he was plagued with influenza, pneumonia and pleurisy throughout his service and was sent back to Australia in 1919 to be discharged in March 1920.
He returned to live in the family home at 29 Burdett Street, Hornsby.
His father Robert, a retired police inspector, enlisted with the 8th Battalion Volunteer Defense Corps in 1942 at the age of 69. He served until 1945.Civil employmentClerk
