The 3801's first journey to Newcastle occurred in 1943, however it was not until 1944 that the C38 class began regular use on the service.
In May 1944 the C38s, at that stage totalled four, were added to the regular motive power pool for the Newcastle Express, the start of an indelible association which would span 26 years. In 1947, the then 20 strong C38 class became the sole power for the Newcastle Express.
The Boronia No:5 Tunnel opened in April 1887. It was a 74m double-track tunnel that was bypassed in June 1909 as a result of improvements to curves during duplication of the line. Although the bore is sufficient for double track use, only one track was ever laid.Physical FormatCowan
