Identifiernot specifiedDate1934PhotographerSam HoodKeywordsBaynie familyChurchesMaronitesLebanese communityDescriptionWhen the Baynie family arrived from Lebanon in 1925, there was a small Lebanese/Syrian community in Redfern and the surrounding areas of Waterloo and Surry Hills. Those in Redfern lived close to each other in the vicinity of Elizabeth Street. The area became known as 'Little Syria'. A Maronite church, St Maroun's, had existed in Elizabeth Street since 1894 and is the Maronite Cathedral today.
Some Lebanese people who arrived in the late nineteenth century and before the First World War had established clothing and haberdashery businesses in Redfern. These families provided work for Lebanese people migrating to Redfern. The Baynie family stayed in Redfern a few months before moving to Wahroonga.
Upon moving to Thornleigh in 1928, the Baynie family worshipped at St Joachim's Catholic church. St Joachim's remained until the late 1980s, when it was sold by the Sydney Archdiocese to the local Lebanese community. The church was demolished and a new modern Maronite church was built. It was named after St George, the patron Saint of Beirut, and also the name of the main Maronite church in Bane, Lebanon.
