Located about half-way up Devines Hill. It has carved steps leading to the cave and the overhang has a large hole in the roof.
Legend has it that convicts were hanged there but it more likely that the cave was used for storage. For example gunpowder needed for blasting had to be kept dry. The overseer may have spent a lot of time there, as the cave provides a perfect view of the most elaborately constructed section of the convict built Great North Road.
While the Assistant Surveyor in charge of the construction was usually a magistrate, he could only hear minor charges. Any serious crime, which might have met with a punishment of lengthy imprisonment or hanging, would have been heard by a judge and jury in a major centre such as Windsor or Sydney. [L. Banks and J.
