It takes its name from a pioneer, John Laughton, who was born in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland in 1815. In 1836, he arrived in NSW as a ship’s carpenter on the Stirling Castle, captained by the well-publicised Captain James Fraser.
Laughton jumped ship in Sydney and eager to use his skills in ship building, travelled to the Hawkesbury. In 1838 he married Charlotte (nee Gutsel), a widow, and occupied himself in boat building and orcharding. His major orchard property, at what is now Laughtondale, was purchased in 1868.
John Laughton was an intelligent and educated man who read widely. He was interested in social reform and made a massive contribution as a lay preacher on the Methodist circuit. He preached as far down river as Peat’s Ferry, where his sister-in-law, Mary Cole was the wife of a local pioneer.
Some of their sons built the present Wisemans Ferry post office, which opened in 1898. A newspaper article claims another of their sons, Elijah, was known for his patent medicines.
Charlotte, who died in 1891 and John who died in 1901 are both buried at Wisemans Ferry cemetery.
