StreetGiblett AvenueSuburbThornleighDetailsGiblett Avenue runs from Nicholson Avenue to Thornleigh West Public School and was named after the Giblett family. It was closed at Quarter Sessions Road in 1982.
In 1893 William Giblett opened a general store next to Thornleigh Station and, as proprietor, he incorporated a Newsagency and Post Office into the store.
His son, (William) Norman Giblett served in World War I as a member of the 55th Australian Infantry Battalion. He was in the first landing at Gallipoli and was quickly promoted to Second Lieutenant, before evacuating with the rest of the troops and being sent to the Western Front. There he was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain and was awarded the Military Cross and Bar for Gallantry in September 1917 at the Battle of Polygon Wood.
On returning to Australia in 1919 Norman worked in his father's store and built a weatherboard house in Short Street. The following year he took over the Thornleigh Post Office and General Store from his father and continued as Postmaster for many years.SourceAn A-Z of Thornleigh including Westleigh (2019) p.75Map[1]
