Identifiernot specifiedPhotographernot specifiedDescriptionThe first Pennant Hills shop, the Railway Store, was a single fronted shop built by Lewis Thompson in 1898. The store comprised a general business with groceries, ironmongery and newspapers and acted as the post office agency. It was reported in the Cumberland Argus on 22 March 1902 that 'Mr Lewis Thompson is making an extensive addition to his establishment'. It was this renovation that made the shop the double fronted store which Lewis sold several years later.
In 1906 i was trading as Rossi and Co. Mt Sydenham owned the premises from 1911 and Richard Hawkins purchased the store from Sydenham about 1917. Hawkins, in turn, sold the premises to William Ogg who sold it to Goode, who modernised it. Goode put a manager in the shop who lived upstairs with his family while Hawkins looked after the post office and newsagency section and rode around the suburb delivering the mail. There have been many other owners over the past hundred years, with many local residents remembering it as Coie's Boutique.
This building still stands today on the corner of Yarrara Road and Pennant Hills Road. When new it was a typical corner store. An awning covered the upstairs verandah, which, in turn, protected both the window displays and customers in both hot and wet weather. The shop served as a home as well and was typical of those built in the late nineteenth century featuring a deep narrow shop floor and a high ceiling. No photographs of the interior have been found but there was probably a long timber counter alon both side walls with timber shelves behind. Stock was sometimes stacked behind the counter and brought out when a customer requested a particular item. There were probably other display cabinets and tables made of timber or metal. Merchandise would have been stacked around the shop floor.
