The Comenarra Parkway
About
StreetComenarra ParkwaySuburbThornleighDetailsThis now very busy road was at one time only a track from Pennant Hills Road through to Wahroonga. In 1945 Kuring-gai Council recorded the need for a direct access to Hornsby Shire by a route generally south of the Pacific Highway. In 1960 further thought was given to the matter and discussions took place with Hornsby Shire Council. Both Councils jointly sought funding from the Department of Main Roads. Late in 1961 a subdivision was considered by Kuring-gai Council for a road through West Pymble to Browns Road. Discussions between the two Councils, and appropriate authorities, continued and consultants were engaged to survey and design the road to the required standard. The Department of Main Roads agreed to contribute half the estimated cost of a two-land connection over the Lane Cove River and Coups Creek (at the Municipal/Shire boundary) provided the two Councils met the balance of the costs. Eventually, in September 1968, the Department of Main Roads gave Kuring-gai Council its contribution of $20,476 and by an agreement with Hornsby Shire Council in 1970 Kuring-gai Council accepted a tender for the construction of a new road.
The long awaited and necessary road was completed in the main during 1972 with both Councils completing work in their respective sections of the road by the end of that year. However, very detailed consideration had to be given by Hornsby Shire Council as to the implications of the connection to Pennant Hills Road at Thornleigh. It was estimated in 1973 that during the two hour morning peak in October that 700 cars would head east while 800 cars headed west.SourceAn A-Z of Thornleigh including Westleigh (2019) p.47Map[1] Related14 The Comenarra Parkway, Thornleigh
