DetailsDr Richard Cuthbert Geeves, known as Cuthbert, was born in Geeveston, Tasmania in 1898. He was the elder son of Richard and Elizabeth Geeves. He commenced a practice in Pennant Hills and Castle Hill on May 6, 1927. A few weeks after he arrived in the district Dr Geeves performed a successful operation on Siamese twins at Castle Hill and it was reported that residents should be proud of this young doctor.
Dr Richard Geeves (OAM, ED) was the son of Dr Cuthbert Geeves who first worked with Dr Dick Gibson in Newcastle on an innovative scheme for geriatric care. While a RMO (Resident Medical Officer) at Hornsby Hospital in 1968 he set up the first geriatric and rehabilitation service in the Sydney area. The service was unique in that all the medical officers involved in the project were general practitioners. In May 1974 Dr Geeves left a well-established practice in Pennant Hills and became a Community Physician in Geriatrics employed by Hornsby Hospital. In this capacity he became responsible for setting up the Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Area Geriatric and Rehabilitation Service. This service ultimately became one of the pilot services for what eventually became the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). Although Dr Geeves was responsible for setting up such an important service to members of the aged community he also worked with and for young people.
Both Dr Richard Geeves and his father Dr Cuthbert Geeves, were on the Committee for running the Scout Training Centre at Pennant Hills. These two doctors served the scouting community for over 60 years from 1927 until 1990.
Dr Richard Geeves and his wife Barbara Geeves (nee Tugwell) moved to Tasmania in 1990 to make their home in Geeveston.
Dr Cuthbert Geeves died in October 1972 aged 74 years and Dr Richard Geeves died in July 2020 aged 95 years.
